Botox

Injection Site Mapping
Botox achieves its effect by blocking acetylcholine release at the neuromuscular junction — the signaling point where a nerve tells a muscle to contract. When that signal is interrupted, the muscle relaxes, and the skin above it smooths. The precision of this outcome depends almost entirely on where the product is placed and at what depth. Injection site mapping is the process of identifying which muscles are driving specific wrinkles, determining whether those muscles need to be fully relaxed or only partially softened, and marking injection points that respect the anatomy of surrounding structures.
At Auveau, Chrissy Gray Lim, PA-C, assesses each patient’s dynamic muscle activity before every Botox session — not just at the first visit. Faces change with age, prior treatments, and lifestyle, so what worked perfectly eighteen months ago may need refinement today. Common injection maps include the frontalis (forehead), the corrugator supercilii and procerus (the “11” lines between the brows), and the orbicularis oculi (crow’s feet). More advanced maps address the nasalis for bunny lines, the depressor anguli oris for downturned mouth corners, the platysmal bands in the neck, and the masseter muscle for jaw slimming. Each site has specific technique requirements, and choosing the wrong entry point — even by a few millimeters — can produce an asymmetric or unnatural result.
Unit Guidelines By Area
Botox is dosed in units, and the appropriate number of units varies significantly by treatment area, muscle mass, and the patient’s individual anatomy. These are not arbitrary numbers — they represent decades of clinical data on how much neurotoxin is needed to achieve meaningful muscle relaxation without over-treating. As a general reference: the forehead typically requires 10–20 units, the glabellar complex between the brows uses 20–30 units, and crow’s feet around each eye average 10–15 units per side. But these ranges are starting points, not prescriptions.
Men, who tend to have greater muscle mass and skin thickness than women, often require higher doses across all areas to achieve equivalent relaxation. Patients with very strong glabellar muscles may need the upper end of the dosing range to see adequate softening. Conversely, patients who are new to Botox sometimes benefit from a conservative first treatment so they can experience how the product feels and settles before committing to a full dose. Chrissy tracks each patient’s dosing history and response, adjusting at every visit based on what the muscles are doing rather than applying a fixed template. This is why patients at Auveau consistently report results that feel right for their face rather than results that look like someone else’s treatment.
Downtime Expectations
One of the most appealing aspects of Botox is that it requires essentially no downtime for the vast majority of patients. The injections themselves take 10–20 minutes depending on the number of areas being treated. Immediately afterward, it is normal to see small raised areas at each injection point — these are superficial and typically resolve within 20–30 minutes. Some patients experience mild redness at injection sites that fades within an hour or two. Bruising is possible at any injection site but occurs in a minority of patients and is generally minor and short-lived.
Post-treatment instructions are straightforward: avoid lying flat or exercising vigorously for four hours after treatment, do not press or massage the treated areas for 24 hours, and skip any facial treatments (such as a laser session or a facial massage) for at least 48 hours. These precautions help ensure the neurotoxin stays precisely where it was placed. Onset of results typically begins at three to five days and reaches its full effect by day 10 to 14. If you are treating for a specific event, scheduling Botox two weeks in advance allows time to see the full result and to address any minor touch-up if needed. Most patients return every three to four months to maintain their results before the muscles fully re-activate.
Natural Vs Overdone Results
The “frozen” look that many people fear is not an inevitable outcome of Botox — it is the outcome of too much product in the wrong locations, or of under-dosing in some areas while over-dosing in others. Natural-looking Botox preserves the ability to make expressions. You should still be able to raise your brows, show surprise, and convey emotion. What changes is that the resting creases and the deepest dynamic lines soften significantly, and the face looks more refreshed rather than immobilized. Achieving this requires an experienced injector who understands facial aesthetics, not just anatomy.
One of the most common causes of an unnatural result is treating the forehead without adequately treating the glabellar complex. If the corrugator and procerus muscles between the brows are still pulling down while the frontalis above them is relaxed, the brows can drop into a heavy, low position that looks tired rather than refreshed. Chrissy Gray Lim, PA-C, approaches the upper face as a balanced system — understanding that changes in one muscle group affect how adjacent muscles compensate. Patients are always encouraged to share reference photos of expressions they love and to describe what they do not want. That conversation is as important as the injection itself. The goal at Auveau is always to look like the best, most rested version of yourself — not like you have had work done.
